Protect your skin on the slopes

Protect your skin on the slopes with recommendations by Sona’s Skin Experts.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must-have all year, but people often don’t think about applying it in the colder months. A broad-spectrum sunscreen is important to protect your skin year-round, especially on the slopes in the winter as the snow reflects – and strengthens – dangerous UV rays. Make sure to cover all areas that will be exposed to the sun, especially ears, hands, face and scalp.  Apply and reapply sunscreen every two hours – an important step to stay safe in the sun at any time of year. It’s also a good idea to wear a lip balm with an SPF, as lips can chap easily and are very sensitive to sun (and wind) damage.

Clothing

When on the slopes, you will want to be sure to cover as much of your skin as possible – and not just to stay warm! High-quality UV gear is a must-have to protect your skin from the sun’s dangerous rays. The risk of sun damage increases as the altitude increases, so it’s extra important to take measures for sun protection. Be sure to wear a neck warmer or face mask and goggles to prevent sun exposure from harming your face and eyes. Most high-quality ski goggles offer up to 99% protection from UV rays, as well as protect your eyes from the wind.

Break For A Few

Same as during the summer months when you take breaks from the sun at the beach, be sure to give yourself a break from the sun every few hours while on the slopes. Breaks not only give your skin and eyes a reprieve from the sun they also provide an opportunity to grab a water so you can stay hydrated.
