Are you suffering from eczema?
It is estimated that over 30 million Americans have some form of eczema, a non-contagious skin disease that usually develops early in life. Since it tends to come and go without warning, eczema can be hard to treat, but there are options. Book an appointment with our specialists today to find out how we can help.
What causes eczema?
There is no definitive known cause for eczema; researchers are still studying the disease, its symptoms and why and how it develops. Studies have found that eczema usually runs in the family and, while certain foods do not cause it, allergies to food can make it worse.
How is eczema diagnosed?
Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is usually first diagnosed in children. A dermatologist begins by looking for a rash on the child’s skin and asking if he or she has experienced itchy skin. Since eczema can be genetic, the dermatologist will ask about family history and if any blood relatives have had eczema, asthma or hay fever. An allergy patch test may be done to rule out contact dermatitis and determine if a particular allergen is making the eczema worse.
Why should you consult a dermatologist?
Many people try to treat eczema on their own by avoiding what they believe is causing it. The truth is, no one thing can control or eliminate eczema completely. That’s why it’s important to follow a treatment plan laid out for you by one of our qualified dermatologists.Book an appointment now

What is the treatment for eczema?
Treatment plans for controlling eczema vary from person to person, but there are a number of options your dermatologist might recommend. Various topical therapies, such as topical steroids, calcineurin inhibitors and photodiesterase inhibitors could be prescribed to be applied to skin to reduce inflammation, while an antibiotic could help heal an infection caused by a secondary bacterial infection. More aggressive approaches include phototherapy and systemic immunomodulatory agents.

What can you expect from treatment?
Since an eczema flare up can vary in length, size and severity, results of treatments can be unpredictable. If you follow your treatment plan, avoid possible flare up triggers, and get to know what helps and what doesn’t, you and your dermatologist can find a strategy for controlling your eczema that works for you.
