Cold vs Heat – Which is Better for Fat Removal?

rectangle May 2, 2019 /
CoolSculpting® Cold vs. Heat

Whether pregnancy has left you with a little pooch or middle age has surprised you with fat in places you never imagined, there are procedures designed to help eradicate stubborn fat that you can’t get rid of. Two of these treatment options are CoolSculpting® and SculpSure, two different approaches to fat reduction.

The question then becomes, which treatment is right for you?

CoolSculpting®

In 1970 doctors saw a correlation between exceedingly cold temperatures and damaged fat cells. Since then, researchers have refined a way to use freezing temperatures to their advantage in order to get rid of unwanted fat without damaging to the rest of the body. The result of their research is the FDA-cleared treatment CoolSculpting®. CoolSculpting® has FDA clearance in 9 indication areas: submental (under the chin) and submandibular areas (area below the jawline), thigh, abdomen, and flanks, along with bra fat, back fat, upper arms, and underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll). It is also FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with submental area treatments.

How it works: CoolSculpting® works by freezing fat cells to their death, a process called apoptosis. Over time, your body processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells. The process happens over a period of a few weeks to three months. The treated fat cells are gone for good and patients can experience up to 20-25% fat reduction in the treated area.

Procedure: Pinchable skin is suctioned into an applicator and the temperature is turned down – way down. Some people describe the feeling as uncomfortable without being painful. In total, a cycle lasts about 35 minutes.  To reduce fat in treated areas a little more, you can schedule another session. Most of patients opt for two sessions.

CoolSculpting® is nonsurgical with no anesthesia and little to no downtime.  After treatment, you may be a little sore, but most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

SculpSure

While CoolSculpting® has been on the market for several years, SculpSure, has only been available for a few. SculpSure works by heating fat cells until they are destroyed. Also unlike CoolSculpting®, SculpSure is only FDA-cleared to treat the submental area (under the chin), abdomen, flanks, back, and inner and outer thighs.

Writing for a beauty magazine, one patient described the pain as similar to really bad menstrual cramps that were hot at the same time. Like CoolSculpting®, the procedure lasts approximately 35 minutes and results reveal themselves over the course of months. Reviews indicate that treated areas are often bloated and swollen, the swelling can last for several weeks.

Patient Satisfaction

CoolSculpting® is the treatment doctors choose most for nonsurgical fat reduction.  The procedure also has many positive reviews from real patients who love their results with CoolSculpting®.

Not only are there patient testimonials, but over 100 peer-reviewed articles establishing CoolSculpting® as safe and effective, there have been over 7 million CoolSculpting® treatments performed worldwide!
