Cold vs Heat – Which One is Better for Fat Removal?

rectangle May 2, 2019 /

Whether pregnancy has left you with a little pooch you don’t especially appreciate or middle age has surprised you with stubborn fat in places you never imagined, there are procedures designed to help eradicate those stubborn pockets of fat that you just can’t get rid of. Two of these treatment options are CoolSculpting® and SculpSure, two different approaches to fat reduction.

The question then becomes, which treatment is right for you?

Since 1970, when doctors began to see a correlation between exceedingly cold temperatures and damaged fat cells, researchers have worked on a way to use freezing temperatures to their advantage in order to get rid of unwanted fat without doing damage to the rest of the body. The result of their research? The FDA-cleared treatment known as CoolSculpting®. CoolSculpting® has FDA clearance in 9 indication areas: submental (under the chin) and submandibular areas (area below the jawline), thigh, abdomen, and flanks, along with bra fat, back fat, upper arms, and underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll). It is also FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with submental area treatments.

Here’s how it works: pinchable skin is suctioned into an applicator and the temperature is turned down – way down. Some people describe it as uncomfortable without being painful. In fact, some patients spend the time on their iPads or reading a magazine while the procedure takes place. In total, it lasts about 35 minutes.

CoolSculpting® is completely nonsurgical with no anesthesia and little to no downtime.  After treatment, you may be a little sore, but most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
CoolSculpting® works by freezing fat cells to their death through a process called apoptosis. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells. That process happens over a period of a few weeks to three months. As the body eliminates the treated fat cells, those cells are gone for good and patients can experience up to 20-25% fat reduction in the treated area. If that’s precisely what you were hoping for, great! If you’d like to reduce the fat in certain areas a little more, you can always schedule another session. In fact, most of our patients opt for two sessions.

While CoolSculpting® has been on the market for several years, SculpSure, has only been available for a few years. It works in a way that is precisely the opposite of CoolSculpting®, by heating fat cells until they are destroyed. Also unlike CoolSculpting®, SculpSure is only FDA-cleared to treat the submental area (under the chin), abdomen, flanks, back, and inner and outer thighs.

Writing for a beauty magazine, one patient described the pain as similar to really bad menstrual cramps that were hot at the same time. Like CoolSculpting®, the procedure lasts approximately 35 minutes and results reveal themselves over the course of months. Reviews indicate that treated areas are often bloated and swollen and that swelling can last for weeks.

Patient Satisfaction

CoolSculpting® is the treatment doctors choose most for nonsurgical fat reduction and there have been many positive reviews from real patients who love their results with CoolSculpting®.

Not only are there patient testimonials, but also over 100 peer-reviewed articles establishing CoolSculpting® as safe and effective for patients. Overall, there have been over 7 million CoolSculpting® treatments performed worldwide!
