Ask An Expert: Botox

rectangle August 5, 2015 /

Q: Who is a good candidate for Botox?
Any adult with annoying wrinkles that are caused by frequent facial movements, such as frown lines between the eyes.  It is important to get advice from an experienced injector, as some wrinkles in the face will require other treatments, such as dermal fillers like Juvederm.

Q: How is Botox different from dermal fillers?
Botox affects the wrinkles that are made by the action of muscles. The “11s” between the eyebrows and the “crow’s feet” on the sides of the eyes are the best examples of wrinkling caused by muscle action.  Fillers treat the wrinkles, depressions and in some instances the “droop” that comes from the loss of fat or volume in the face.  Areas that fillers help are the Nasolabial folds, the creases that extend from the nose to the corner of the mouth, and the Marionette lines that extend from the corner of the mouth to the jaw.  Newer fillers such as Voluma add volume to the cheeks and help to “lift” the face and restore “plumpness”.

Q: What does Botox do?
Botox acts on the muscle to “relax” or lessen the action of the muscle.  When the muscle doesn’t “work” as hard, the wrinkles will be greatly minimized or will disappear completely.

Q: When should you begin to see results?
Some people tell me they can see a slight difference in a day or two.  Most people will be at nearly full effect in one week.  It is at its peak of effectiveness in two weeks.

Q: Why would you recommend Botox?
The effects of Botox are very predictable.  It does what it promises if dosed and administered properly.  It has a wonderful safety record, no or minimal pain with treatments and no or minimal side effects.  It is, in my opinion, the best “fresher-upper” available.

Q: What is one of the most rewarding client transformations you’ve seen?
I have a client who I have been treating for more than eight years.  She came to the center because she said she was tired of people always asking her why she was angry.  She had deep wrinkles between her eyebrows that were easily treated with Botox. Botox did the job and she relayed to me that she really thinks people relate to her differently now that she doesn’t look like she is “in a bad mood.”

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
Seeing the transformation that can occur from Botox as well as other aesthetic treatments that I do is very rewarding.  It makes a huge difference in how people feel about themselves and can be a real boost to their self-confidence. I also like the consultations that I do.  There is abundant, confusing, over-stated, or just plain wrong information available.  Developing a treatment plan and educating clients is very important to me.  Many times people focus on one wrinkle and have no idea that while Botox is an awesome treatment, it won’t fix everything.  That is where client education comes in and it is an essential part of any treatment.
